I won’t be able to think of brilliant titles every day or so, so sometimes, the date will have to do!

Health! It’s been wet, chilly and today there is snow on the ground.  While I enjoyed two walks on Wednesday, yesterday I stayed indoors all day.  Not a great choice and one I need to change.  Today the wind is blowing and I know my coat is not built for this challenge.  On the plus side, I am enjoying my daughters tomato soup (from scratch) full of healthy vegetables, including a whole head of garlic (not just a clove or two!)


Wisdom:  Somehow this moved to the middle part, so I’ll leave it there.  I’m learning to see my life as a process that I move into.  Still working through Designing Your Life.  I’m reminded that life is flowing, changing, and navigating it is a process.  I will never be done with it.

Personal Finances: They are depleting!  I need to start my employment search now.  One of the challenges is the needs of my family.  They need to be considered when I’m applying and interviewing.  I suspect online teaching and being a substitute, or something totally different will be the end result.  We are working hard to eliminate waste in the kitchen – and garbage.

A Matter of Perspective…

At the beginning of February, when I began this horrendous climb in weight, I was devastated by the numbers.  And yes, despite everything I say, it is still a bit of a numbers game.  I started on track in January, moving from 227 pounds to 223.  One week, one pound.  And then February happened and I lost something. At week six of this year, I weighed 228 pounds.  I was not happy, but the story wasn’t over!  I climbed from 223 to 232 (according to my TOPS scale on Thursday night).  I blogged about that at One Year, One Week, One Pound.  while I wasn’t happy about any of the weight gain, it still happened.  And it was the evenings that were killing me.

So I changed.  If I am consistently making lousy choices at night, and great choices in the morning ( and who will argue that my porridge isn’t a great decision?) why not switch it up?  So that’s what I’ve been doing since Thursday March 1, 2012.

Today, I went to the gym, determined to get back to my Monday weigh ins.  Because I’d been weighing in every morning ( not a great habit, I know) I knew I would have a bit of a loss.  This morning we are back where we were at week 6.

And guess what?  I’m just as happy to see 228 today as I was unhappy to see it in February.  You just have to keep plugging along.

February was a hard month to walk through.  In terms of weight loss it was a desert.  I wasn’t plodding forward, I was racing back.  It’s not the first time I’ve done that, and I don’t think it will be the last.  But I did learn from it.  And here’s what I think I learnt:

  • You just keep “staying the course” – doing what you know is right, like going to the gym, improving your eating habits, and tweeking as needed
  • The world will still turn if I eat breakfast at 8 pm.
  • Life is just as workable if I eat supper at 8 am.
  • When you hit the skids in this journey – re-evaluate.  Add what needs adding.  Take away what needs taking away.  Switch what needs switching.

It’s COLD, COLD, COLD outside!

If  per chance you’ve been following Calgary’s weather (which is always interesting) you’ll know that most of January has been quite warm – I even rode my bike a few days this month!  However,

P.O.P. 30%It’s Cold and so I thought it would be helpful to remind you of some ways to keep warm – via the Calgary Philharmonic chorus.  I’ve posted about this before, but it bears repeating, now that we really need the information again!  If you need further explanation of some of their ideas, check here.

It’s been a while since I posted, so I thought I’d better catch you up on what’s going on in my very cold world.

I’ve braved the cold and made it to the gym both days.  And to work.  It just takes so very long to get all those layers on!  But I am so grateful for my ski-pants!  They make walking tolerable!

On the weight side of things, I did half a pound, so not quite what I wanted, but we’ll get there!  I did manage to record all my eating for yesterday, which is a major accomplishment for me.  I find it so very hard to keep track.  That’s where the PLAN comes in so handy.

Here’s today’s plan, based my shift (11 am – 7:30 pm) which embraces both lunch and supper.

8:30 am:  breakfast (which is ready now)

10:30 : am:  a spelt blueberry muffin, made by me.

1 pm: First break – slice of bread with bison

3:00 pm.  Lunch break – vegetable beef stew (lots of veggies) and a lovely slice of my spelt bread.

5:30 pm: Salad with half a can of salmon and roasted veggies for flavour.

8 pm (or whenever I get home)  almonds, 1 cup mixed veggies (mostly beans)

Of course all these times are approximate.  Life isn’t just like clockwork.  But the plan helps me to get it together.

Year 2, Week 1: Success

  As you can see, my paper is quite filled up by my attendance at the gym.  Not to fear, however.  I’ve started a new one – one that’s a little more organized.

Showing up for the things you say you are going to show up for is important if you want to get to where you are going.  It’s the beginning.

I’ve committed to showing up for Ni90 as well.  Then I signed up for the Canadian Living 6 Week Slimdown!  It should be finished in time for the Calgary Co-op Wellness Challenge. On top of all that, my last TESL course starts this week.  I think I’ll have to say NO to further commitments for a while – at least until April.

Most of my RED posts are heading over to the new blog.  But I will be posting a weekly update and perhaps a recipe or something.  So here, I hope is a chart I made for last weeks efforts.  The olliebollen have taken their toll (more about that later this week) but I still was able to lose a pound.  That was the goal!  That is the goal.  Just one pound.

Hmm.  I thought I had it figured out.  Some blogs I follow have such nifty charts.  Since I can download pdf. files, I saved my chart as one.  It shows up as a link. Sorry.  I am trying.  That’s another goal for the year.  I wonder if it’s the format I’m using, or if I have to spend some money in order to make charts.

In the meantime, here’s my starting picture, taken the last day of the year in my “Olympic” teeshirt!

Let’s see how loose that shirt gets this year!

I Worked Today!

This morning I managed to sort of adhere to my morning plan:  15 minutes of waking up my mind with a kakuro puzzle. This isn’t my book, but… Actually I don’t need another Kakuro book.  Mine has 1000 puzzles in it, and after 4 summers I am on puzzle number 749, which has me stumped!  If you need a challenge and a change from Sudukos, I’d go this route!

I digress.  Again.  Once my mind is up and the alarm on my phone starts beeping, I have tried to start diligently writing down my prayers.  (A result of reading The Help in October).  I am not as diligent as Abilene, but I do enjoy thinking on paper and conversing with God that way.  This morning I thought much about love, but I also thought about WORK.  I go to the gym almost every weekday morning (sometimes it ends up being afternoon or evening) but I don’t always work.  I go through the motions.

Next year my focus is going to be Yellow but I’ve started thinking a little about it now.  Yellow is the “Life Work” portion of my parachute.  Work is not going through the motions.  Work is effort.  Work is sweat – mental, emotional, physical.  It’s not just the paycheck that results from work.   There’s growth and change.  But it only happens when I work.  I can stroll on the treadmill or I can work on the treadmill.  The time will be the same.  The results vastly different.

While I never really stroll on the treadmill, unless like Monday when I showed up at 7:30 pm. with a ton of stuff and no gym bag, I haven’t really pushed it.  Today I started pushing.  I increased the incline on my 4 minute walks and am slowly increasing the time on my runs.  But the incline is more important than the running.  I’m not really ready to amp that up at the moment.

Now it’s time to get some breakfast and move on with my day.  It’s going to be a good one!

Eggnog Time!

I just took a swallow of my eggnog – uncut – and I remember why it is that I don’t drink the stuff at my house.  But once the tree is up at my house it’s eggnog time.  We buy a large container to drink while tree trimming (this year 3 people were enjoying that!) and thereafter a 1 litre size for my morning coffee.

My favourite brand is Dairyland, which I can buy at the Co-op! Here’s an informative link that will give you someone else’s opinion – but I’m a “Light” drinker and it is sweet!

There was a time in my life when I didn’t drink eggnog, but that changed many years ago when I came very close to spending an arm and a leg on eggnog flavoured coffee beans. I’ve come to learn that even diluted with coffee, it’s too much flavour.  Now I a 1:1 ratio of the nog and my skim milk, nicely frothed.

Chapter 50 of my Year of Growing Rich (Napoleon Hill) talks about “Not too Little, Not Too Much” and that about sums up my enjoyment of eggnog in December!

By the by – my goal is still to have my second number be a 1.  I’m 3.5 pounds away from that on the gym scale. I’ll be eating out tonight and tomorrow night, with another Christmas party on Saturday.  It will be hard work.  Keeping you posted keeps me on task!

Quick Update!

Keeping abreast of the Adventures of Cinnamon Bear is certainly making me think about blogging!  Here quickly is the new adventure “Presto the Magician” but I haven’t found the time to listen for a few days – so don’t spoil it for me!  I like the idea of a little bit each day!

On the gym front – I slept in, so a short workout on the elliptical was all I managed.  But…I did manage it!

On the cruise front – I got my years wrong!  It’s not due until December of 2012.  How funny is that?  They said I could pay in increments but…I’m just going to pay it to myself and pay them later!  I’m collecting change to pay for spending money and bike rentals!

Tonight I’m also going to a knitting group!  That’s what you get for admiring someone’s funky hat while they are buying deli meat!  We chatted and it turns out there’s a group that meets within walking distance of work.

Speaking of work, I better get there!
